131 person received Montenegrin citizenship last year

The authorities of Montenegro have published data on foreigners who received Montenegrin passports in 2020-2021, including through the “Citizenship by Investment” program.

The holders of Montenegrin passports during this period included people born in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, China, the UAE, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, Angola, Syria, and other countries.

At the top of the list by number of passports received are citizens of Russia and China.

According to the Civil Liberties Center (CEGAS), 453 citizenships were granted in the period from June 3, 2006 to May 24, 2021.

Let us remind you that the implementation of the project to grant Montenegrin citizenship in exchange for investment began on October 1, 2019. The program runs for three years. Interested candidates must invest from 250 thousand euros in one of the projects in the north of the country or from 450 thousand euros — on the coast or in the country’s capital — Podgorica.

The list of priority sectors includes infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and the processing industry. The program quota is 2,000 people.

The application fee is 100 thousand euros.

It is important to understand that buying property in Montenegro does not provide an opportunity to obtain citizenship.

Submitting documents for citizenship can be done remotely; applicants need to visit the country once. At the same time, investors and their family members will not need to renounce their original citizenship in favor of Montenegrin citizenship; they will be able to keep both.
