Montenegro is the most advanced candidate country for membership in the European Union (EU), German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a working lunch with Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić and the leaders of the Western Balkan countries in Tirana.

According to the statement of the Government of Montenegro press service, the main topic of the meeting was regional cooperation and mechanisms for its improvement.

“In this regard, Chancellor Merkel particularly noted that Montenegro is the most developed candidate country for membership in the European Union, emphasizing the importance of the idea of a common regional economic market, which, she said, can benefit all Western Balkan countries,” the statement says.

Krivokapić thanked Chancellor Merkel for the recognition she gave Montenegro, as well as for recognizing the reforms and European course of the new government.
