When a court translator is required for the deal

If at least one party to the deal does not speak Montenegrin (Serbian), the notary is legally required to involve a sworn court translator (sudski tumač). The translator reads the contract aloud in translation before signing and certifies the translation with their stamp — without this the notary will not certify a transaction involving a foreigner.

Court translators in Montenegro are accredited by the Ministry of Justice and work with specific language pairs: Russian, English, German, French, Turkish and others. In this directory you can filter translators by municipality and by language to find a specialist who works with your language pair near the place of the deal.

Beyond accompanying you at the notary, a sworn translator is needed for official document translation: certificates, powers of attorney, cadastre extracts, bank statements. Such a translation bearing the translator's stamp is accepted by Montenegrin state bodies, banks and courts.

The cost of a sworn translator is roughly from €50 per document or per hour of attendance; the exact figure depends on volume and urgency. Budget for this alongside the notary tariff and the property transfer tax.
